K9 Dark began his career as a Narcotics Detection canine with Custom & Border Protection in Detroit, Michigan in 2015 and was assigned to the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. He spent 13 months there before transferring to Port Everglades, Florida in 2016. Now that Dark is retired, his favorite activities include playing with all of his BarkBox toys, lounging in the puppy pool, and going on walk to check out the latest smells.
Working K9s perform a variety of occupations alongside their Handlers ensuring our public is safe from threats or danger, along with protecting our country domestically and abroad. They are typically classified as equipment with their medical needs NO longer funded once their service is completed. Often times they have accelerated health issues like hip dysplasia or PTSD as a result of their years in the field.
Paws of Honor is a nonprofit providing continued quality routine and specialized veterinary care to ALL retired Military and Law Enforcement K9s no matter the department, agency, or branch of service at no cost to the Handler who becomes financially responsible for them upon retirement. Through Paws of Honor’s Veterinary Affiliates continued medical care is provided to each retired K9 enrolled in our Veterinary Care Program.
