Rest in peace, K9 Devaney

EOW 10/20/2023

"Devaney is an 11 year old Mal that had to be retired as a dual purpose Patrol/Narcotics K9 due to his inability to physically work in high heat/humidity effecting his ability to work. He also started to show signs of degenerative myelopathy where he has slowly been losing control of his hind legs. He was a great partner at work who always had my back no matter what. It's heartbreaking to see him struggle to jump up on the couch or in a car due to his disease. I was Devaney's second handler at 3 yrs old and we worked together for over 7 years with the Massachusetts State Police. He has located numerous suspects, missing adults and children, suicidal persons and Narcotics throughout that time. He is that stereo typical crazy Mal that scared many but is a true sweetheart now that he retired. He shares the house now with two other dogs and is the idol of my 2 year old German Shepherd pet who wishes he was a Police dog! They are always together and enjoy relaxing and playing together. Devaney has a very strong bond with my wife and daughter who he follows everywhere. He loves his beds and still shreds every toy he gets, even though many of his teeth have been removed due to wear and tear over his many years of Patrol work."

Working K9s perform a variety of occupations alongside their Handlers ensuring our public is safe from threats or danger, along with protecting our country domestically and abroad. They are typically classified as equipment with their medical needs NO longer funded once their service is completed. Often times they have accelerated health issues like hip dysplasia or PTSD as a result of their years in the field.

Paws of Honor is a nonprofit providing continued quality routine and specialized veterinary care to ALL retired Military and Law Enforcement K9s no matter the department, agency, or branch of service at no cost to the Handler who becomes financially responsible for them upon retirement. Through Paws of Honor’s Veterinary Affiliates continued medical care is provided to each retired K9 enrolled in our Veterinary Care Program.
