Rest in peace, K9 Diablo

EOW 9/18/2023

K9 Diablo started working in February of 2013 and was trained in narcotics detection, tracking, & patrol work. Diablo was affectionately nicknamed Dee Dee and his handler only uses his full name when he’s in trouble! Diablo was great at tracking and the majority of his apprehensions were through tracking. Diablo is a pretty serious canine but has a soft spot for small animals. Since retirement, Diablo has traveled to the mountains of NC and did a few easy trails. He lives at the beach but hates swimming! Diablo had a hip replacement and still suffers from fibrotic myopathy. He loves going to physical therapy (mainly for the cookies) but sometimes for the attention too. His favorite downtime activities include chewing on ALL the toys, playing with his Labrador “sister”, talking junk to the new K9, Dex, and pushing toys under the couch for his mom & dad to get!

Working K9s perform a variety of occupations alongside their Handlers ensuring our public is safe from threats or danger, along with protecting our country domestically and abroad. They are typically classified as equipment with their medical needs NO longer funded once their service is completed. Often times they have accelerated health issues like hip dysplasia or PTSD as a result of their years in the field.

Paws of Honor is a nonprofit providing continued quality routine and specialized veterinary care to ALL retired Military and Law Enforcement K9s no matter the department, agency, or branch of service at no cost to the Handler who becomes financially responsible for them upon retirement. Through Paws of Honor’s Veterinary Affiliates continued medical care is provided to each retired K9 enrolled in our Veterinary Care Program.
