Dory has worked for the Federal Government since June of 2016. She came to this job after deciding the regular service dog life was not for her. Needing more excitement in her life she became an Explosives Detection K9 working in the WMA and making multiple trips to Afghanistan to support the War on Terror. During her service career she was sidelined by injuries to her back legs requiring TPLO surgery in both. Due to the tough nature of the work life for an Explosives Detection Canine she was retired early to save the wear and tear on her surgical repaired legs. In retirement Dory loves to spend time taking long walks, playing in creeks, and playing fetch. She loves the company of other dogs and loves to play tugga-war with them. She enjoys taking naps in the sun on both hot and cold days. Taking car rides and hanging her head out of the window is also a favorite past time.

Working K9s perform a variety of occupations alongside their Handlers ensuring our public is safe from threats or danger, along with protecting our country domestically and abroad. They are typically classified as equipment with their medical needs NO longer funded once their service is completed. Often times they have accelerated health issues like hip dysplasia or PTSD as a result of their years in the field.

Paws of Honor is a nonprofit providing continued quality routine and specialized veterinary care to ALL retired Military and Law Enforcement K9s no matter the department, agency, or branch of service at no cost to the Handler who becomes financially responsible for them upon retirement. Through Paws of Honor’s Veterinary Affiliates continued medical care is provided to each retired K9 enrolled in our Veterinary Care Program.
