Rest in peace, K9 Duke

EOW 10/26/2023

Duke is a 9 year old German Shepard that was recently retired by the Fairfax County Police Department. Duke was born on August 7th, 2011 in the Czech Republic. He and his handler, Detective Dan Griffith, were certified as a drug detector team by the US Customs and Border Protection at their Canine Center in Front Royal, VA. Duke assisted the Fairfax County Police Street Crimes Unit in many investigations over an 8 year period. When Detective Griffith was promoted and left the Street Crimes Unit, Duke was retired. Duke is now enjoying the comforts of being retired with the Griffith family. His favorite activities are playing fetch and sleeping! Due to a sensitive stomach, Duke doesn't eat may treats, but is very fond of the "Greenies" dental biscuits.

Working K9s perform a variety of occupations alongside their Handlers ensuring our public is safe from threats or danger, along with protecting our country domestically and abroad. They are typically classified as equipment with their medical needs NO longer funded once their service is completed. Often times they have accelerated health issues like hip dysplasia or PTSD as a result of their years in the field.

Paws of Honor is a nonprofit providing continued quality routine and specialized veterinary care to ALL retired Military and Law Enforcement K9s no matter the department, agency, or branch of service at no cost to the Handler who becomes financially responsible for them upon retirement. Through Paws of Honor’s Veterinary Affiliates continued medical care is provided to each retired K9 enrolled in our Veterinary Care Program.
