K9 Duke is a 6 1/2 year old German Short Haired Pointer. He served honorably with the Massachusetts State Police for 5 years. Duke is a 94/C certified K9 specializing in the detection of heroin, methamphetamine, and cocaine. He worked with his handler Trooper Jessica Gonzalez for the Troop F Detective Unit at Boston Logan International Airport. He was responsible for detecting dozens of kilos of illegal narcotics and millions of dollars of illegal drug proceeds. Working at the airport was an exciting and fast paced environment. Duke has been called to work vehicles, luggage, mailrooms, packages, warehouses, even airplanes. When not at work Duke spends hours playing in the backyard chasing the ball or trying to catch birds. He also LOVES to swim in the pond by our house. He is an energetic ball of love and has been the best partner anyone could ask for. Duke is excited to continue living the good life of playing, swimming, and enjoying his kong filled with peanut butter before bed every night.
Working K9s perform a variety of occupations alongside their Handlers ensuring our public is safe from threats or danger, along with protecting our country domestically and abroad. They are typically classified as equipment with their medical needs NO longer funded once their service is completed. Often times they have accelerated health issues like hip dysplasia or PTSD as a result of their years in the field.
Paws of Honor is a nonprofit providing continued quality routine and specialized veterinary care to ALL retired Military and Law Enforcement K9s no matter the department, agency, or branch of service at no cost to the Handler who becomes financially responsible for them upon retirement. Through Paws of Honor’s Veterinary Affiliates continued medical care is provided to each retired K9 enrolled in our Veterinary Care Program.
