Canine Jax came to the Winchester Police Department in 2016 from Holland by way of Shallow Creek canine in PA. Canine Jax was green when purchased and was subsequently dual certified in narcotics and patrol. Jax worked the streets of Winchester along side his partner on midnight and second shift until he was retired in 2020. Jax was lovingly called “Ninja” by officers within the department because he was unusually quiet and tended to “stalk” potential apprehensions until they made the decision to run. Jax made countless drug busts in his career and was successful on a number of tracks and deployments for peaceful surrender.

Working K9s perform a variety of occupations alongside their Handlers ensuring our public is safe from threats or danger, along with protecting our country domestically and abroad. They are typically classified as equipment with their medical needs NO longer funded once their service is completed. Often times they have accelerated health issues like hip dysplasia or PTSD as a result of their years in the field.

Paws of Honor is a nonprofit providing continued quality routine and specialized veterinary care to ALL retired Military and Law Enforcement K9s no matter the department, agency, or branch of service at no cost to the Handler who becomes financially responsible for them upon retirement. Through Paws of Honor’s Veterinary Affiliates continued medical care is provided to each retired K9 enrolled in our Veterinary Care Program.
