Paws of Honor has joined forces with Hurricane’s Heroes to help retired Military and Law Enforcement working K9s across the country receive the veterinary care they deserve!

Jet (formerly known as Marley) originally lived in a Texas shelter where he faced possible euthanization early in life. Jet’s prior first family was unable to keep him for unknown reasons. Fortunately, Jet was rescued by Ginger's Pet Rescue and brought to Seattle, Washington. The Seattle shelter contacted the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, who quickly realized Jet would make a great search dog and was then picked up by The Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services' Office of Fire Prevention and Control. Jet joined the State's Urban Search and Rescue Team - New York Task Force 2, which included members of state and local emergency response agencies. Jet was then later located by another K-9 Trainer and tried for explosive detection. In early 2019, Jet was then paired up with a K-9 Handler with the Auraira Campus Police Department; in late 2019, the K-9 Handler accepted a position with another agency leaving Jet. With no turn around, Yama Gafari (Auraria Campus Police Department) took over the K-9 program and was paired up with Jet. Yama and Jet had an instant bond like no other and Jet knew his forever home would be with Yama. Yama took Jet’s training back to the basics and started an official K-9 academy through the Adams County Sheriff’s Office. Jet showed great drive and determination and this was the very start of an permanent and successful career at age 6. Since then, Jet has passed all of his certifications (state, national and federal) and has loved his new job, home and family. In late 2023, Jet officially retired at almost 11 years old. Jet does not like being retired one bit as Yama goes to work without him, but Jet still has his loving family including Yama’s wife, almost 2 year old son and daughter on the way.

Working K9s perform a variety of occupations alongside their Handlers ensuring our public is safe from threats or danger, along with protecting our country domestically and abroad. They are typically classified as equipment with their medical needs NO longer funded once their service is completed. Often times they have accelerated health issues like hip dysplasia or PTSD as a result of their years in the field.

Paws of Honor is a nonprofit providing continued quality routine and specialized veterinary care to ALL retired Military and Law Enforcement K9s no matter the department, agency, or branch of service at no cost to the Handler who becomes financially responsible for them upon retirement. Through Paws of Honor’s Veterinary Affiliates continued medical care is provided to each retired K9 enrolled in our Veterinary Care Program.
