K9 Joan was born in Florida on 3/29/2014. From there, she was relocated to New York and enrolled in The Puppies Behind Bars Service Dog Program. K9 Joan was then transferred to the ATF to be trained for Explosive Detection. In 2016, she graduated and became a Police Explosive Detection K9 for the Federal Government. After working for five years, she suddenly became very ill and almost succumbed to effects of Addison’s Disease. Veterinarian professionals were able to reverse the direction of the disease after seven days in the ICU. K9 Joan was medically retired and is being treated with daily medications and monthly injections to keep her body functioning properly. K9 Joan is now healthy and happy at home, where she is playing and “being a dog” with her handler and loving family.

Working K9s perform a variety of occupations alongside their Handlers ensuring our public is safe from threats or danger, along with protecting our country domestically and abroad. They are typically classified as equipment with their medical needs NO longer funded once their service is completed. Often times they have accelerated health issues like hip dysplasia or PTSD as a result of their years in the field.

Paws of Honor is a nonprofit providing continued quality routine and specialized veterinary care to ALL retired Military and Law Enforcement K9s no matter the department, agency, or branch of service at no cost to the Handler who becomes financially responsible for them upon retirement. Through Paws of Honor’s Veterinary Affiliates continued medical care is provided to each retired K9 enrolled in our Veterinary Care Program.
