K9 Szimi worked for the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority Police in Virginia. Szimi traveled all across the state and provided numerous sweeps and protection details for the President(s) of the United States and various members of the government, both domestic, and foreign. Szimi survived, and returned to active duty, after suffering Mesenteric Torsion, which is when the intestines twist on themselves. The condition has a nearly 100% mortality rate, but Szimi pulled through showing how much of a true fighter he really is. After working for over six years, Szimi retired, and now enjoys being at home and playing with his family.
Paws of Honor is a nonprofit providing continued quality routine and specialized veterinary care to ALL retired Military and Law Enforcement K9s no matter the department, agency, or branch of service at no cost to the Handler who becomes financially responsible for them upon retirement. Through Paws of Honor’s Veterinary Affiliates continued medical care is provided to each retired K9 enrolled in our Veterinary Care Program.
Working K9s perform a variety of occupations alongside their Handlers ensuring our public is safe from threats or danger, along with protecting our country domestically and abroad. They are typically classified as equipment with their medical needs NO longer funded once their service is completed. Often times they have accelerated health issues like hip dysplasia or PTSD as a result of their years in the field.
