K9 Thera was an explosives detection working dog in the Washington Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. She and her assigned Special Agent handler graduated the Search Enhanced Evidence K9 school in 2017. Since that time, K9 Thera has participated in numerous assignments throughout the United States to include the Summit of the Americas, the Presidential Inauguration, the State of the Union Address, the Boston Marathon, the Kentucky Derby, the USMC Marathon, and many events for elected and appointed US government officials. K9 Thera’s day to day operations were based around supporting ATF’s mission of curbing violent crime by assisting field operations personnel and state/local agencies. K9 Thera was extended past her typical retirement age due to her love of the job and physical ability. K9 Thera exchanged the daily grind for retirement and country living in June of 2023.

Working K9s perform a variety of occupations alongside their Handlers ensuring our public is safe from threats or danger, along with protecting our country domestically and abroad. They are typically classified as equipment with their medical needs NO longer funded once their service is completed. Often times they have accelerated health issues like hip dysplasia or PTSD as a result of their years in the field.

Paws of Honor is a nonprofit providing continued quality routine and specialized veterinary care to ALL retired Military and Law Enforcement K9s no matter the department, agency, or branch of service at no cost to the Handler who becomes financially responsible for them upon retirement. Through Paws of Honor’s Veterinary Affiliates continued medical care is provided to each retired K9 enrolled in our Veterinary Care Program.
