K9 Vito went through his initial K9 explosives detection training at Joint Base Lackland in San Antonio, TX in 2020. After graduating, he was assigned to the Federal Protective Services based in Kansas City, Mo. After a short time in Kansas City, he was reassigned to me at the St. Louis Lambert Airport Police Department K9 Unit. It was not love at first sight, but we quickly grew to appreciate each other. Vito was always a tremendous worker with an abundance of enthusiasm and loved doing his job. We quickly grew into a very efficient team and provided explosive detection support and operations for Lambert International Airport, and the greater St. Louis region. Throughout his short career Vito in addition to providing explosives detection support, he met and interacted with lots of various professional sports teams, movie and rock stars, high ranking political figures, foreign dignitaries, and an array of Star Wars characters. While I though hanging out with a couple of Star Wars wookies was super cool, Vito was not quite sure what to make of them even though they were super nice. Vito has had chronic arthritis, inflammation and swelling in both shoulders throughout his career, which has let him to an early retirement. Since his retirement Vito has adapted excellently to home life and has become involved in every aspect of family activities. He gets lots of toy time and is always engaged with whatever is going on around the house. He is a big help with the laundry and had become a really good gym bro helping out with our daily workouts. Vito also loves playing with his older sister K9 Olga who retired several years ago (and is a Paws of Honor dog). They get along great and have tremendous zoomies around the house and in the backyard.

Working K9s perform a variety of occupations alongside their Handlers ensuring our public is safe from threats or danger, along with protecting our country domestically and abroad. They are typically classified as equipment with their medical needs NO longer funded once their service is completed. Often times they have accelerated health issues like hip dysplasia or PTSD as a result of their years in the field.

Paws of Honor is a nonprofit providing continued quality routine and specialized veterinary care to ALL retired Military and Law Enforcement K9s no matter the department, agency, or branch of service at no cost to the Handler who becomes financially responsible for them upon retirement. Through Paws of Honor’s Veterinary Affiliates continued medical care is provided to each retired K9 enrolled in our Veterinary Care Program.
