Canine Zeno was a member of the Pennsylvania State Police. He served as an Explosives Detection Canine. He was utilized in a variety of situations to include bomb threats, security sweeps, dignitary protection, gun searches, shell casing searches, and large venue security. He successfully passed yearly certifications every year until his retirement. He was utilized to conduct explosive sweeps for Penn State football games, multiple presidential and gubernatorial elections, NASCAR races, Little League World Series games, bomb threats, etc. He has traveled and and worked in nearly all 67 counties of Pennsylvania. He was one of only 6 PSP Explosive Canines in service. During his final year of service, there were only 2 Explosives Detection Canines in service, one of which was him. It was a busy year! Canine Zeno was and is a high-drive working dog. He still loves to play retrieve and still has a very high prey drive as evidenced by the numerous times he has tried to kill our family cat. He has not adjusted well to retirement. It is plainly obvious that he was born to work and would rather be doing that. Every day is a test to exercise him mentally and physically.

Working K9s perform a variety of occupations alongside their Handlers ensuring our public is safe from threats or danger, along with protecting our country domestically and abroad. They are typically classified as equipment with their medical needs NO longer funded once their service is completed. Often times they have accelerated health issues like hip dysplasia or PTSD as a result of their years in the field.

Paws of Honor is a nonprofit providing continued quality routine and specialized veterinary care to ALL retired Military and Law Enforcement K9s no matter the department, agency, or branch of service at no cost to the Handler who becomes financially responsible for them upon retirement. Through Paws of Honor’s Veterinary Affiliates continued medical care is provided to each retired K9 enrolled in our Veterinary Care Program.
