The Hawai'i Foodbank Annual State Employees Food Drive has begun and will run through May 9, 2024. The issue of hunger continues to be a significant challenge facing our community, affecting those most vulnerable among us, and the University of Hawai‘i (UH) 'ohana is not immune from this issue. With the higher cost of food and the elimination of emergency allotments provided to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) beneficiaries during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hawai‘i Foodbank is bracing for higher demand for their services.

UH is one of the largest state contributors to this annual event. Last year, state employees donated 24,254 pounds of food and $151,212 in cash, providing food for 345,319 meals. UH employees accounted for $63,386 in cash and 6,332 pounds of food (which provided food for 141,558 meals). The UH 'ohana truly made a difference!

The State's goal this year is to raise 50,000 pounds and $167,000.00. The top 5 most wanted items are financial contributions, canned meats/tuna, canned meals, canned vegetables or fruits, and rice (5-10 lb. bags).

I hope each of us who is able to assist our neighbors in need will give what we can to help.
