Like you, I love Morgantown and West Virginia. We live in a state of hard working, caring and genuine people. Many in our region are blessed with quality jobs, access to successful schools, numerous recreational opportunities and an overall high quality of life. The story is different for some of our neighbors. For 20,000+ people in Monongalia and Preston Counties, access to food, a basic human need, is scarce. Over 16,000 people in one of West Virginia's wealthiest counties (Monongalia) are considered food insecure and hungry. This cuts deep into my heart. I cannot imagine my two young daughters confessing they are hungry only to open an empty refrigerator. I envision the helpless look and it makes me feel the pain many parents and kids experience on a daily basis. Their helpless feeling motivates me to raise awareness and resources.
As part of United Way's Emerging Leaders campaign, I pledge to do what I can to help alleviate this injustice. Starting at midnight on Monday, October 9th I will not eat for 36 hours. For me, this is a fasting exercise to help me appreciate the pain and helplessness of food insecurity. For others, this is a daily struggle. Could your kids concentrate in school if they did not have a meal to eat? How hard would it be for you to complete your job duties without food in your stomach?
I challenge my friends and family to do what you can to help our neighbors. If you are able, please consider donating to my campaign or even fasting to raise awareness of this epidemic. All funds raised go to United Way's campaign which are ultimately dispersed to non-profit organizations in Monongalia and Preston Counties. I am hopeful my experience raises awareness of a local injustice affecting our brothers, sisters and neighbors. Thank you for your consideration and support!
