Brandy

SPONSORED BY: K9 Brandy was born on October 11, 2012. She was raised in the Puppies Behind Bars System and was assigned to Edna Mahan Correctional Facility in New Jersey, where she was trained in their Explosive Detection Canine (EDC) Program. She was purchased by the Federal Government in November of 2013 and completed her 16 week EDC training in April of 2014. Brandy was assigned to her handler, Brian M., who had just retired his first K9 named Bradley. Brandy was stubborn and young, the perfect combination for a great EDC dog. She learned slowly, but became a great working dog because of her stubbornness and drive for food. Brandy retired early from service in 2018 because of ulcers in her stomach that could not be controlled without ending her working career. Brandy traveled on multiple deployments to war zones and loved to work. Her retirement was necessary for her health, and has kept her alive to be a great pet for her family. Brandy still loves food to this day and eats her breakfast and dinner like a world class eating champion. Brandy lives in Centreville, Virginia with her handler Brian and his family. She loves to play with Brian's kids, Katelyn and Jacob, and to sun herself on the back deck. These days, Brandy can be found lurking around the dinner table for scraps, pushing her head into your arm for a scratch, or just relaxing on her bed. I have worked with some pretty cool people and cool missions, including Secret Service on POTUS and VPOTUS missions, and providing force protection on Fort Myer. My favorite treats are Milk Bones, any cheese that exists, and peanut butter. My dad takes me on a lot of trips on our down time, like camping on Shenandoah, retirement trips to the zoo (the seal pup doesn’t like me there), and plays fetch with me everyday at the dog park. My most absolutely favorite activity is to sleep, I’m quite a lazy man now (professional sleeper some might say). I spend most of my days with my giant Kong, and a dinosaur plush toy named Timmy (who is missing and arm and a leg at the moment). But I love retirement life, and love my new home with my dad and all his friends. Working K9s perform a variety of occupations alongside their Handlers ensuring our public is safe from threats or danger, along with protecting our country domestically and abroad. They are typically classified as equipment with their medical needs NO longer funded once their service is completed. Often times they have accelerated health issues like hip dysplasia or PTSD as a result of their years in the field. Paws of Honor is a nonprofit providing continued quality routine and specialized veterinary care to ALL retired Military and Law Enforcement K9s no matter the department, agency, or branch of service at no cost to the Handler who becomes financially responsible for them upon retirement. Through Paws of Honor’s Veterinary Affiliates continued medical care is provided to each retired K9 enrolled in our Veterinary Care Program.
