Christy was training to become a PTSD dog, but because of her whining and barking, her career path changed to Explosive Detection. K9 Christy's primary job during her five-year career, was vehicle and package searches, as well as protective sweeps in support of Force Protection at a secure U.S. Department of Defense facility in Virginia. She also assisted other federal and local agencies in the Washington, D.C. area. Cobra

SPONSORED BY: In Memory of K9 Gears MWD Cobra was born in Germany on 12 January 2007 and was brought to Lackland Air Force Base on 27 May 2009 to complete training in Patrol and Explosive Detection. Cobra completed here training and was transferred to Naval Support Activity Naples, Italy to begin her job in Explosive Detection. In July 2009 Cobra was assigned to her first and only handler, Ashley Smith. In March 2011, Cobra and I deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. During our time there Cobra and I became inseparable and missions were non-stop. There were many memories made but one in particular is worth telling the story. On 10 November 2011, Cobra and I were at Forward Operating Base in Sperwan Ghar, packed up and going out for mission. Cobra, myself and 6 others were packed into a Stryker and set off for the checkpoint we would be searching later. About 6 kilometers into the drive there was an explosion, the vehicle Cobra and I were in had just hit an improvised explosive device. I did not know what had happened for the first few moments but as I came to I realized what had happened. At first I could not find Cobra because she has ran to the front of the vehicle. After what seem like a life time I was able to pull her to me and check her over, we were both lucky and had no injuries. The next step was to get out of the vehicle, the back hatch was jammed shut and unable to be opened so our only other option was to go out of the top. If you didn’t know, trying to push a dog through a hole while all four legs are splayed and stiff as a board is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I ended up climbing out of the top and attempting to pull her through the top, still legs in the way. A fellow solider ended up climbing onto the vehicle and getting her out for me. Once we were back on the ground Cobra and I were tasked to clear a helicopter landing zone for the Medivac, this was the scariest moment during my deployment. The reason is because we were both rattled and in shock from the explosion, so I looked at Cobra and told her “this is the moment that if anything is there, we step on it and save everyone.” We walked every inch of the HLZ, hoping if there was something Cobra would find it or we would set it off, there was nothing and the Helicopter landed, took the injured with no problem and we made our way back to the FOB. We completed many more mission after this and left Afghanistan in Jan 2012, uninjured and with all of our limbs. Over the next year Cobra and I both fought with PTSD, Cobra would not eat if I wasn’t feeding her, she did not like loud noises, closed spaces and could not be near people. Her anxiety was through roof most days, so after trying multiple medications and treatments, Cobra was put up for retirement and in May 2013 I brought Cobra home. The first year was the roughest, for both of us but we were able to get each other through our PTSD moments and grew even closer. Cobra is the best thing that could have ever happened to me, because of her I have been able to have a family, friends and able to get through all of my mental health up and downs. In 2014, I had my daughter and Cobra’s mental health has been amazing ever since. My belief is when my daughter was born it gave her a job and with that less anxiety. Cobra has traveled from Naples, Italy to Washington DC to San Diego, California and with each PCS has thrived in retirement life. We now live in Moyock, North Carolina with my husband and three children, Emma (7), Joshua (4), and Logan (3). Cobra’s best dog friend is our other dog Kodi who is a Cane Corso and is the gentlest giant when it comes to Cobra. Cobra’s hobbies have changed over the years, recently her favorite thing to do is to lay on her bed while chewing on her Kong. Her favorite snack is the pepperoni she gets wrapped around her medications, she was just recently diagnosed with hip dysplasia. Through Paws of Honor’s Veterinary Affiliates continued medical care is provided to each retired K9 enrolled in our Veterinary Care Program. K9 Cobra is sponsored in memory of K9 Gears, 15 March 2009 - 17 August 2021. "Gears was born out of the US Customs breeding program in Front Royal, Virginia, he has the tattoo to prove it! Gears always thought the tattoo gave him street creds. He was then purchased by the ATF and later went to serve at another Government Agency. He was small, skinny and he could jump like a gazelle. He often buffed out his elbows when he sat just to make himself appear bigger. One of his trainers called Gears his little Ferrari. This little slick coated black dog went on to become an excellent detection dog winning many awards in his years at USPCA certifications and even placed second in the World Police and Fire Games. He really wasn’t a great competition dog, he went fast and it was the handlers job to slow him down. It didn’t always look pretty but he always found the target. While paired with his handler they traveled to war zones on 14 different occasions. He was always remembered by those he protected because he would seek out their attention around every corner. If you had treats, all the better. He liked to be held like a baby and would go limp in your lap. On his ofttimes he would go swimming, he loved to swim and swam all across the county in every state we stopped in. He swam in the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Gears was well traveled. In retirement Gears went on to live with family members who spoiled him rotten. He developed an affinity for ice and would go sit near the freezer when he wanted some. He even had his own boat that he would take on evening rides. In January 2021 he developed an aggressive cancer in his foot that spread throughout his body. Paws of Honor helped with the Chemo treatments and overall care that helped make his last six months go smoothly. He was mostly pain free until he was put to rest in his home surrounded by the three people who loved him the most. He was one of a kind and unfortunately for any dog that follows him, they will be measured against the great standard that Gears set. We will miss him."
