Ellie May and her handler started working together in July 2015. They had many successful tracks finding missing persons and lost kids over the 6 years of working together. Her favorite tracking treats are Pedigree Little Champions. Ellie May has tracked individuals not only in the Commonwealth of Virginia but also in West Virginia and North Carolina. She was the third K9 unit with the Virginia State Police to be added to the FBI call out roster to assist the federal agency in their cases. Since her retirement, Ellie May has been living it up walking with her handler/owner and soaking up the sun on her own front porch keeping her handler's/owner's residence safe. On February 9th, 2016, K-9 Endo was awarded the Purple Heart and Medal of Valor from the Volusia Sheriff’s Office for his role in apprehending a violent felon who also shot K-9 Endo during the apprehension. These awards made K-9 Endo the most decorated Police K-9 in the history of the Volusia Sheriff’s Office. On May 5th, 2016, Deputy Brett Whitson and K-9 Endo were awarded the “Spirit of Law Enforcement” award at the Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida banquet. On November 17th, 2016, K-9 Endo was again awarded the TOP DOG amongst both drug and bomb detections K-9’s during the 19th annual Southern Coast K-9 Drug and Bomb Detection seminar beating out over 100 hundred other K-9 teams from around the county. On November 11th, 2019, K-9 Endo was awarded 1st Place Drug detection K-9 at the 22nd annual Southern Coast K-9 Drug and Bomb Detection seminar beating over 50 other K-9 teams from around the county. On November 17th, 2021, K-9 Endo was awarded his second purple heart after he was shot twice while apprehending an armed felon. On March 6th, 2024, K-9 Endo was awarded the Animals in War and Peace “Medal of Bravery” in the Nations Capital where he was presented the award by U.S. Representative Gus Bilirakis of Florida’s 12th district. K9 Enzo is a retired (2020) patrol/narcotics K9 who served for the Fairfax County Police,VA. He began his training at just 1 year old. He proved to be a good tracker and very good at finding narcotics. His tenure with the department concluded with being assigned to the department’s SWAT team as well as his usual patrol duties. K9 Enzo retired because of issues with arthritis in his front shoulders. He has been enjoying retirement with his handler and their move to SC. Arthritis does so much better in warmer weather! Europa started out her career training to be a guide dog, but was removed for excessive sniffing and scavenging. ATF’s Explosive Detection Program is Food reward based, so these two traits made her ideal for our program. Europa spent 6 weeks with the training staff being imprinted on the explosive odors and then she and I spent an additional 10 weeks learning towork together as a team. Europa was in service from approximately June 2013 until June 2018. Europa deployed to numerous NSSE eventsthroughout the United States including the Super Bowl, Republican National Convention, Presidential Inauguration, and Papal Visit 2015. Europa also deployed to numerous high profile special events in the United States including the Boston Marathon (3 times), World Police and Fire Games, several PGA tournaments, 2015 UCI Road Championship, several Army Navy football games, multiple NFL football games in the Baltimore and Washington DC area, 3 presidential visits to the City of Baltimore, multiple Marine Corps Marathons in DC, and celebration for the 200th anniversary of the Star Spangled Banner at Ft McHenry. She also responded to local and national critical incidents including the Eric Frien manhunt in Pennsylvania, Congressional baseball practice shooting - where she alerted to the suspect’s storage locker, an Active Shooter at the Columbia Mall, a shooting death of a Baltimore City Police Detective - where she located ballistic evidence that assisted the investigative team inclosing the case, shooting death of a DSP trooper - locating ballistic evidence at the scene, and a school shooting at a HS in St Mary’s County MD - receiving a Unit Citation from the SO for this response. Eva was born on January 15, 2011 in Holland. In September of 2013 she traveled to Denver, Indiana. In October of 2013, she was procured by the Department of Defense and assigned to a facility in Arlington, Virginia. She underwent many months of intensive training and was certified in explosive detection in April of 2014. Throughout her career, Eva provided security for numerous high level government officials and foreign heads of state. She achieved numerous certifications through the Department of Defense, IPWDA, NAPWDA, USPCA, and the ATF. When not working, Eva enjoys long walks, playing tug, and playing with her canine pals Maple, Heli, and Rony. Her favorite toys are a kong and a canvas tug. Her favorite treats are Three Dog Bakery soft baked cookies. In retirement, Eva will spend her time relaxing in the sun, stalking and chasing squirrels, and scaring the mailman. K9 Fata was assigned to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and trained in Explosive Detection. Fata worked at the Newark Liberty International Airport from August 2018 to May 2022. K9 Fata was born without a gallbladder. Unfortunately, her condition impeded her to continue working. She retired to her handler and now enjoys chasing crickets, swimming, taking hikes, and playing with any tennis ball that squeaks. "Ficko Started his career with me in the winter of 2014. we came together in Lackland Texas as part of the TSA explosive detection program attached to the MTPD K9 unit. Ficko was an energetic pup who loved to play fetch and tug. Early in his career while doing a search of a rock quarry Ficko took off into the woodline and diverted from searching for explosives and came back over a tall grass hill with a fifteen pound groundhog in his mouth and brought it to my feet. He has always been a great hunter. He has enjoyed protecting the Washington DC, Virginia, and Maryland area over the last 8 years always willing and happy to come to work. His favorite toy was a jute tug. Now he loves kongs with peanut butter." Fido was born on January 11, 2016 and graduated from the National Explosives Detection Canine Academy in September of 2018. He was assigned to work at JFK International Airport and spent his days searching passengers, cargo, vehicles and airplanes. Fido also loved to spend his days off chasing squirrels and napping in the garden next to a tree. Throughout his career, Fido has traveled all over the country and participated in various scenario based trainings and details. Fido's most recent travels brought him to the west coast in 2022 for Superbowl LVI in Los Angeles, CA and Thanksgiving week at San Diego International Airport. Fido was medically retired on September 14, 2023 and now spends his days relaxing at home with his favorite stuffed turtle while he recovers from surgery. Finn is a retired dual purpose Belgian Malinois who proudly served as the sole K-9 for the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia from 2015-2018. Finn was imported from the Czech Republic before being purchased by the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office and assigned to his partner, Deputy Dave Sparnroft. This K-9 team attended the arduous Multi-Purpose Canine Training course at K-2 Solutions in Southern Pines, NC and subsequently certified in all disciplines through the International Police Work Dog Association, the North American Police Work Dog Association, and the Virginia Police Work Dog Association. Once certified, K-9 Finn and Deputy Sparnroft had an immediate impact by assisting their fellow officers in getting drugs off of the streets and locating suspects. This team also participated in many community events by demonstrating the capabilities of a dual-purpose K-9 team. In 2017, Deputy Sparnroft had a daughter born with special needs and had to leave the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Barry Letterman (retired) and then Major Donald Simpson (now Sheriff) advocated for Deputy Sparnroft and granted Finn an early retirement so that he could stay his family in his forever home. Finn has settled into retired life and is a great family member to his now 5-year-old sister. Finn has traveled to the beach where he likes to run in the waves and has hiked up to the mountains of Virginia for a family picnic and off-leash “zoomy” session. Finn lives for bacon or peanut butter treats, road trips, and any chance to chew on his Kong toy (or his sister’s stuffed animals). Finn is a loved family member and deserves the best – even in retirement. K9 Flex is a 4yr old German Shepherd from Flammersbach Germany. He is a dual purpose K9 and together we have attended patrol school, narcotics school and urban tracking. K9 Flex has many accomplishments during his career to include apprehension/surrender of numerous dangerous subjects, and has taken hundreds of pounds of narcotics off of the streets. One of K9 Flex’s more significant seizures included approximately 88lbs of methamphetamine along with 28lbs of fentanyl/cocaine mix. K9 Flex has a a major reputation in the area as we have assisted with approximately 10 outside agencies spanning over 4 counties. K9 Flex also enjoys his downtime with the family as he loves playing with children, other dogs and swimming in the river. MWD Fredy was assigned to Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, Virginia as a drug detector dog. MWD Fredy had three finds during his career onboard NWSY. K9 George's full name is Pretty Boy George. He worked for TSA up until he was diagnosed with idiopathic seizures. George was so enthusiastic about work that it helped his handler with waking up at 0300 for work every morning. George jumps off all fours for three things: food, fetch and work. K9 George is more than a an explosives detection dog - he also has a gift of smelling tumors that aided in getting his handler's wife treated. George now has a full time job protecting his mom while taking the occasional break to go swimming, play fetch and watch the floor for stray BBQ. Canine GERA worked for eight years as an Explosive Detection Canine (EDC) with TSA and is now enjoying a well-deserved retirement. As an EDC, GERA traveled to Houston, Phoenix, Reno in addition to different local cities in the Bay Area to assist with screening of the travelling public.
